ALPA Signature Escape N°1 – SIGHT & SOUND
What does an image actually sound like? A unique journey exploring the connection between photography, sound and the way we perceive the world. In collaboration with Scottish Hi-Fi manufacturer Linn Products
WHAT DOES AN IMAGE ACTUALLY SOUND LIKE?
Photography is usually understood as a visual medium. But seeing never happens in isolation.
A sound can change the way we experience a place. Music can create images in our minds. And sometimes a single sound can bring back an image we thought we had long forgotten.
The realization that many photographers in the ALPA community share an equally strong passion for sound and music became the starting point for our first ALPA Signature Escape: SIGHT & SOUND.
A journey exploring the connection between two senses — seeing and listening — and the way they meet in the human mind.
GLASGOW — LEARNING TO LISTEN
Our journey begins in Glasgow, home of Linn, one of Scotland’s most renowned makers of high-end audio systems.
Here, sound engineer Phil Hobbs will lead us through a dedicated Learning to Listen session.
Rather than simply hearing music, we will begin to explore how we listen: to space, texture, detail, dynamics and silence.
The aim is not to become sound engineers. It is to sharpen perception.
Because learning to listen more consciously may ultimately change the way we look.
THE PURSUIT OF PURE SOUND
At Linn, Gilad Tiefenbrun, CEO of the family-owned Scottish company, will introduce us to another perspective: the pursuit of the purest possible reproduction of sound.
How much stands between a recording and what finally reaches our ears?
And what happens when technology becomes sufficiently precise that it almost disappears?
For ALPA, this is a particularly fascinating parallel. Linn and ALPA work in different worlds, but both share an obsession with precision, craftsmanship and the tools through which we experience something larger than the object itself.
FROM SOUND TO SIGHT
From Glasgow, the journey continues north to the Isle of Skye.
Here the emphasis shifts from listening to photographing — but the first part of the journey remains with us.
Led by long-time ALPA Ambassador and Escapes Host Julian Calverley, we will explore one of Scotland’s most elemental landscapes through weather, light, space and silence.
Julian’s own photographic practice has long been influenced by sound and music. On Skye, we will explore what happens when that sensitivity becomes part of the photographic process.
Not simply looking for images.
Listening for them.
THE ISLE OF SKYE
Skye is a landscape where conditions rarely remain unchanged for long.
Light moves across mountains and water. Weather arrives and disappears. Distance, scale and atmosphere continuously reshape the landscape.
Rather than following a rigid programme of locations, we will respond to what the island gives us.
There will be time to photograph, to wander, to observe and to return to places when the conditions feel right.
As with every ALPA Escape, the emphasis is not on producing a prescribed result, but on creating the space to see differently.
JULIAN CALVERLEY
Julian Calverley has been closely connected to ALPA for many years as photographer, Ambassador and host of ALPA Escapes.
His landscape work combines technical precision with an instinctive response to atmosphere and place. Music and sound have also played an important role throughout his creative life.
For SIGHT & SOUND, Julian will guide the photographic part of the journey and explore with the group how listening, memory and atmosphere can influence the way an image is made.
A SMALL CIRCLE
SIGHT & SOUND is deliberately intimate.
A small group allows us to move differently, spend meaningful time together and respond spontaneously to changing conditions.
This is not a conventional photography workshop and there is no prescribed photographic style or camera system.
Participants are invited to bring the equipment they feel most comfortable working with. A selection of ALPA equipment will also be available to experience during the Escape.
ALPA SIGNATURE ESCAPES
SIGHT & SOUND marks the beginning of a new series within ALPA Escapes.
Signature Escapes explore photography through encounters with other senses, disciplines and creative worlds.
In 2028, the journey will continue with SIGHT & SCENT, created together with Icelandic fragrance house and creative collective Fischersund.
Different senses. Different places.
The same question: what changes when we begin to perceive more consciously?
